NEW SECTIONS IN THE SCANMAN'S HANDBOOK 1
---------------------------------------------------------------
Version 12.00 of The Scanman's Handbook has its fair share of
new frequencies. A few new sections have been added to the
menus, as well as many corrections/enhancements/additions to
existing sections.
New sections:
1. [Corrections Department]
This section, as its probably already apparent to you, has
a listing of many frequencies which are used by Prisons,
Jails, Lockups, Correctional Facilities, Rehabilitational
Camps, etc.
2. [Interior Department]
[Independent Government Agencies]
[Commerce Department]
[U.S. Executive Branch]
[Justice Department]
[Treasury Department]
These sections have been basically taken from the original
"Government Systems" area, and re-written from scratch. A
a lot of the frequencies in these sections are also new to
The Scanman's Handbook, and I'm sure that you will find
them to be organized in a better fassion than before. The
original "Government Systems" area still exists, under the
new title of "Other Misc Government". Approximately 90%
of this section has also been re-written from scratch, and
now contains the left-overs which simply didn't fit in the
new sections listed above.
Frequencies for the following services have been added to
the above sections:
∙ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
∙ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
∙ Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
∙ Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
∙ Federal Emergency Warning Radio System
∙ Federal Reserve Bank
∙ Federal Maritime Commission
∙ General Services Agency (GSA)
∙ Interstate Commerce Commission
∙ National Transportation Safety Board
∙ Nuclear Regulatory Commission
∙ U.S. Postal Service
∙ Vetrans Administration
New Frequencies:
1. The following frequency systems have either been added,
enhanced, or have had corrections made to them since the
last release of the program:
∙ CLEMARS - Ca. Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Radio System
∙ CLERS - California Law Enforcement Radio System
∙ CMARS - California Multi-Agency Radio System
∙ FIREMARS - Fire Mutual Aid Radio System
∙ OES - Office Of Emergency Services
∙ SMARS - State Mutual Aid Radio System
∙ SECURE - State Emerg. Commun. Using Radio Effectively
∙ LEAF - Law Enforcement Assistance Force (Military)
∙ California Fish & Game Department
∙ California Highway Patrol
∙ State Hospitals
∙ California Department Of Justice
∙ Colleges & Universities - New frequencies and channel
notes added, mostly for the CSU and UC campuses.
∙ CALTRANS - California Transit - New list format, but
saved old for reference purposes.
∙ Newspapers - Added more frequencies, mainly trunked.
∙ Radio/TV News Media - Added large generic radio
station freq (non-broadcast type) list. Also added
a LARGE "master" listing of remote pickup type freqs,
their group identifiers, and info about how each group
of frequencies is used.
∙ Television Broadcasts - Added a few more stations to
this area, mainly San Diego and Mexico stations.
Also, completely changed the format of this area so
that channel frequencies and station listings are
now separate.
∙ Hotels & Inns - Extensive Revision, several added.
∙ Los Angeles County - Fire Departments; Added Verdugo
Fire Communication Frequencies. Also added "unit
types" to LAPD frequency area. Added some new freqs
to the LAFD listing.
∙ Public Transportation - Added large list of bus freqs.
Other Miscellaneous Changes:
1. Several portions of the program, mainly paragraphs of
text, have been re-formatted for easier reading. Now
instead of sloppy paragraphs reaching to each side of
the screen, they are instead indented with approximately
12 character margins.
2. The front-end menu program has been totally re-written
from the ground up using a different language. Screen
writes no longer go thru BIOS resulting in much faster
screen updates for those with old CPUs. If you try to
execute one of the menu selections from this program, and
nothing happens, its because there is insufficient memory.
See the portion of this documentation which deals with
"Memory Problems" for possible solutions. One note on
the new front end menu utility; to toggle the display
mode of the maps between EGA or VGA mode, press <SPACE>
while the scroll bar is over one of the map menu selections.
HOW TO USE THE SCANMAN'S HANDBOOK 2
---------------------------------------------------------
When you first execute either of the main programs,
SCANMAN1.EXE or SCANMAN2.EXE, you will be brought to the
main menu. At this point, you may use the arrow keys to
select a field that you wish to read. Upon selecting the
desired section, strike the ENTER key to begin reading.
To return back to the main menu, you may press the ESCAPE
key, the F10 key, or the M key for <M>enu. Once you are
at the main menu, if you decide you do not wish to make
another selection, you may hit the C key to <C>ancel the
main menu and go back to where you were previously at.
When you are ready to exit The Scanman's Handbook, this
may be done by hitting Q to <Q>uit at any time. You may
also exit by hitting ESCAPE from the main menu, but you
will be asked if you are sure that you wish to do so.
While you are reading, you may strike the F1 key or the
H key for <H>elp to gain access to the HELP.DOC file that
is supplied, listing all of the internal function keys.
You may also switch through different sets of screen
color configurations by pressing ALT-C. Next, you may
view the information box by pressing I for <I>nfo while
you are reading through the handbook.
To navigate through the text as you are reading, you may
use the Up/Down arrow keys as well as the PgUp/PgDn keys.
Using the + or - keys will advance or retreat you one
whole section at a time through the handbook. The Home
and End keys may be used to jump directly to the start or
ending of the handbook.
To access the text searching mode, you may press the
F key to <F>ind a string of text (case insensitive). If
you find one match, but desire to search for another, you
may then press the R key to <R>epeat the search.
To access the printing command, press P to <P>rint. From
here you may select a variety of different options, such
as the type of printer you are using, how many lines to
print per sheet of paper, etc.
To access the text extracting command, press T for <T>ext.
From here, you may select whether you would like to
extract the entire section or just the screen to a file.
MEMORY PROBLEMS 3
---------------------------------------------------------
Because of the large size of the SCANMAN1-2.EXE programs,
you may experiance a "Program too big to fit in memory"
error upon execution of them. If you are loading one
of the executables from the front-end menu, and nothing
happens, this is also because there is insufficient mem.
If this does happen, try to remove a few TSR programs
from memory. A minimum of 510K to 520K free CONVENTIONAL
mem is required to execute either of the two program files.
FINAL RELEASE INFORMATION 4
---------------------------------------------------------
After two full years of working on The Scanman's Handbook,
I have decided to terminate the program. I have two basic
reasons for this. The first is that I can no longer find
the free time needed to maintain the program. As you may
have noticed, the last version of The Scanman's Handbook
was released in May of 1994.
Although version 12.00 was completed in mid November, I
have been using the time between then and now to bug-test
the new front-end menu under various operating systems
such as OS/2, Windows, and so on, as it was written in
a language that I'm just starting to get the hang of! I
don't think it should give anybody any problems, though.
The date is now December the 1st of 1994, and it has
taken nearly 7 months to complete what would have
normally been done in one or possibly two. The second
reason is that I have lost interest in the program. I've
recently been learning some new programming languages and
have become involved in the production of a few programs
here and there - one of which is called "ProBase", a freq
database for your scanners (hint, hint, - a plug for me).
The program has grown quite a bit since its initial
release in January of 1993. It has gone from a 30K, 100
lined text file to a 1.3 megabyte (uncompressed source
code) 20,000 lined executable 'database' if you will.
Not bad for a small time scanner lover. :-)
But because of the fact that v12.00 will be my last
version, I have decided to distribute it for free. The
printing and text extract options will be enabled in
this version for all of those who wish to use them. To
all of you who have written sending your complements and
frequency additions, and to the small handful of readers
who have registered, I thank you very much for your
generous support. Maybe sometime down the line, one of
the frequency books such as Police Call, Monitor America,
or Scan Fan will release a computerized version. Until
that time, unless I've missed something, this program
will be the only one. <grin>
